What Does an Elopement Day Look Like? A Relaxed Timeline for Your Dream Wedding
One of the questions I get asked all the time is, what does an elopement day look like? And honestly? It can look however you want it to. That's one of my favorite things about elopements. There isn't a checklist you have to follow or a timeline you have to squeeze yourself into. Instead, you get to build a day that feels like the two of you from start to finish.
What Does an Elopement Day Look Like? There Are No Rules
If you've been picturing an elopement as a quick ceremony where you sign some papers and head home, think again. Your day can be as simple or as full as you want it to be. Maybe you want to dress up in your dream wedding attire and exchange vows overlooking your favorite mountain. Maybe you'd rather wear hiking boots, your favorite jacket, and keep everything super casual. Both are equally perfect.
The same goes for your guest list. If you want it to be just you, your partner, your officiant, and me, amazing. If you can't imagine getting married without your parents, your best friends, your dog, and your college roommate there, let's make it happen. An elopement isn't about following someone else's idea of what a wedding should be, it's about creating a day that actually feels right for you!
Build an Elopement Timeline Around the Things You Love
One of the biggest perks of eloping is that you don't have to rush from one event to the next. Your timeline is built around your experience, not around keeping 150 guests entertained. You could start the morning getting ready together over coffee, read private vows at sunrise, stop for a picnic with your favorite charcuterie board, celebrate with barbecue from your favorite local spot, or even have your brother carry deli sandwiches in his backpack for a lunch break.
End the day with champagne, a hike, watching the sunset, or grabbing dessert from your favorite bakery instead of a traditional wedding cake. There really aren't any wrong answers. Your ceremony can be ninety seconds long or include personal vows, music, readings, and meaningful traditions. Every elopement is different because every couple is different.
What Makes an Elopement So Special?
For me, the best part of an elopement isn't that it's smaller, it's that it gives you room to slow down and actually experience your wedding day. Instead of spending the day checking the clock or worrying about what's happening next, you get to focus on the moments you'll actually remember. The conversations, the quiet pauses, the excitement before your vows, the laughter over lunch, and the feeling of standing in a place that means something to both of you. Whether that's a mountaintop, a beach, your family property, or somewhere you've always dreamed of visiting, your location becomes part of your story. That's really what makes an elopement so special. It's intentional, personal, and centered around your relationship instead of a long list of expectations!
